*A WHOLE NOTHER THING:
A selection of words from my vast vocabulary, including the ubiquitous "the," the always versatile "and," and the more obscure "incontrovertible," arranged in frequently meaningful, sometimes profound, yet often pedestrian sentences and statements, designed with one goal in mind-- that being, to communicate; keeping in mind the oft-used bromide, "Never use two words when one will do the same job as two or more words would have done, unless you just want to take up space and sound important," which is, I must concede, too often a secret objective of mine indeed. And yet, now, the secret is out.

Two OPPOSITE slants on the same information

Okay, here's a real eye-opener. I ran across this story last week. It was presented by The Oregonian, and I also heard about it on KOPB radio (our local NPR station). But the thing that grabbed my attention was that The Oregonian made the whole story sound like the rules have been relaxed concerning same-day delivery of alcoholic beverages, and KOPB made it sound like the new rules were MORE RESTRICTIVE! When OPB ran the story on their stations, they led with something like, "If you run out of beer at your party and you want more delivered, you're out of luck."

Astounding!

Here are the links to the stories, first as told by The Oregonian. The headline reads "OLCC relaxes limits on same-day beer, wine deliveries to homes":

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1213327526226630.xml&coll=7

And here's the OPB story. The headline on their website reads "State Liquor Board Approves Same-Day Delivery, With Restrictions":

http://news.opb.org/article/2326-state-liquor-board-approves-same-day-delivery-restrictions/

So, which is it? The stories present the EXACT same facts; but depending on whom you interview and how you present those facts, you can make the story sound however you want! Now, I'm not at all saying that they did anything intentional, but I think it is imperative that people understand that what they read and hear in the media needs to be taken with discernment!

"43% of all statistics are made up."
